WORK AND WAGES.
STRIKE AT RAILWAY WORKS. PERTH, March 17. Recently a portion of , the work on the trans-Australian railway was let hy contract to contractors paying higher wages .than the Government. The men employed by the Government yesterday struck, and all work except the contract is held up. WELLINGTON TALLY CLERKS. [Per Press Association.! WELLINGTON, March 17. Some surprise was expressed at today's sitting nf the Conciliation Council when the dispute between the shipowners and the Wellington Tally Clerks' Union came on. It had been generally understood that the employers had agreed to the demands of the Union with the exception of tho wages and preference clauses. Mr Pryor announced that the,shipowners did not intend to go further and would oppose the clerks right through. The dispute now goes to the Arbitration Court.
