An unknown man, who has been about' the beach at' Mount Maunganui during the last few days, was seen to strip and go for a bathe . yesterday. A party from Tauranga, including Constable Skinner, the Harbourmaster and others, attempted to get outsid'e the harbour in a launch, but were forced to return, owing to the heavy easterly sea.
They then attempted to reach the man. who in the meantime had swum to Rabbit Island, in a sixteen foot boat.
Hi is was swamped, and the- occupants, who had on lifebelts, wore dragged ashore on a lifeline. It took two hours to bring round the harbourmaster.
Attempts at rescue were abandoned for the night. Further attempts are now being made. The island is small and uninhabited', but there is good shelter about a quarter of a mile from the beach.
