Herdman, who sots' that it has been found that the high rates of pay oarned by outside occupations make it difficult to obtain the services ot first-class men for the polico force. The force is now a good one, but can bo improved if the new conditions of employment should tempt the good m< lt Is with, the hope that the young New Zealundcrs who are not afraid ot steady hard work, and who arc prepared to submit themselves to strict, discipline, will offer their services, that tho scale of pay lias been improved. Tho Stato is prepared to give good pav for good service. . The rate for the Superintendents in Auckland and Wellington under tho new' scale is per year £460 to £520, with increments of £lO yearly. The- Superintendents at Christcliureh and Dunedin will receive £460 to £490, with increments of £lO every two years; Inspectors £3BO to £440, with a rise of £lO par annum; Sub-Inspec-tors £330 to £360, with £lO every two years; ,Senior Sergeants 14s 6d to 16s per flay, with increments of 6d per day every two years ; Sergeants 12s to" 13s (3d, with a rise of 6d per day every two years; Constables, und'er throe years' service, 9s; three to siv years' service, 9s 6d; six to nine years' service, 10s; nine to fourteen years' service, 10s 6d; fourteen to twenty Years' 'service, lis; Chief Detectives. l6s Cxi to l"s Gd, a.n increment of 6d per day "every two years; Peteet iveSergeantSj 13s to 16s, 6d every two years; Detectives, lis fid to 14s. with "a Is per day every three years; Probationary Constables, 7s.
