IN THE RING.

SUMMERS DISQUALIFIED. The contest between Johnny Summers, lOst 121b. and Alf Morey, lOst lib, disappointed the large crowd at the Melbourne. Stadium . last week, Summers being disqualified in- the seventh round, on the ground of butting. Summers had liis man well beaten. He got a left hook to the chin in the first round, and Morey took seven seconds on the floor. Thereafter Summers's perfect placing of his short, powerful stabs kept his opponent in trouble. Morey was very active and scored points with clever left and right work, but he never troubled the Englishman. who left himself wide open for Morey's futile rushes. Summers had been using his head.to gain position in his well-known style, and was cautioned in the sixth round for butting. Morey's corner had twice protested. In the next round Summers had his head down again and was disqualified. He protested loudly, and the crowd gave the decision a mixed reception, cheers predominating. .If Summers did butt—and those in a position to. see mostly agree that he did not—it was without indent. "It was my style of fighting," said Johhny afterwards. " When a man's head is down he must look up. I don't deal in fouls. I never have fouled, and never will. I have fought eleven contests in Australia and always been acclaimed fair, until I met this Melbourne boy. I feel very sore about it." * ■
