TRAMWAY BOARD.
■YESTERDAY'S MEETING. The Christ-church Tramway Board met yesterday; present—Messrs J. A. Flcsher (chairman), D. Sj'kes, G. T. Booth, H. Pearce, C. M. Gray, S. A. Staples and A. W. Beaven, the Hon J• Bnrr and Dr Thacker. Accounts amounting to £3974 6s lOd were passed for payment. Tho revenue account for the four weeks ended February 22 showed that the gross earnings had been £11,4.06, as against £10,4-55 in the correspond)ng period last year. The operating expenses were £63(36, as against £6035 last year, leaving the net earnings £5040, as against £4420 in 1913. After the deductions for interest and sinking fund the surplus was £738, as against, £249 last year. The surplus to February 22 was £6007, against £1612 up to the same, da,to in 1913. A letter was received from the Cashmere Ratepayers' Association, suggesting that as a means of adding to the attractions of the Hackthorne Road, a tea-kiosk should be erected in connection with a tram shelter. The Association suggested that band concerts might be given on the hills, and that special arrangements should be made in connection with the issue of tickets. It also suggested that the upper reservoir reserve could be obtained for a nominal rent. The terms on which the kiosk should be erected could be arranged between the Association and the Board. , Mr C. M. Gray moved that the matter should be referred to the Works Committee. '
Dr Thacker seconded the motion, and suggested that some picture .syndicate should be approached to see if » pictur? hall and kiosk could b© erected for motion pictures and for 6kating. The motion was carried. The Board decided to accept an invitation to witness a trial of a petrolelectric motor-'bus on Wednesday. A letter asking for a donation towards the Spreydon Domain was received from the Spreydon Domain Board. Mr Sykes, in urging the Board to make a grant, said the domain was to he improved and the Domain Board had undertaken heavy expenditure to make it popular. The attractiveness of tho domain would be to the benefit of the tramway system. There would bo no charge for admission, but every effort was being made to make the domain a good Sports ground. He moved for a grant of £l,O. Mr Gray moved as an amendment that the grant should be £5. He said that the Board's means for assistance was limited and should be spread over as many points as possible. The amendment was not seconded, and the motion was carried.
The Superintendent of Police wrote, stating that the police officers had been instructed to prosecute in cases where they saw breaches of the tramway by-laws.
