NEW BRIGHTON NOTES.

EVENTS OF THE WEEK. [From Qck Cobrresfondent.] A meeting of tlio R-a-wliiti Social and Card Club was held last evening, Mr J. Mason presiding. Tho secretary reported the result or v tho special deputation's visit to tho manager of the Pier respecting a. reduction in tho tariff for the coming season. As tho terms proposed by Mr Taylor wore unsatisfactory, it was decided that a' furthor deputation, consisting of Messrs J. Mason and M • Cooper, should wait on Mr C. H. Ager, tho Pier proprietor, and endeavour to como to more satisfactory terms. The next meeting was arranged for Friday next, March 20. * ♦ 0 * •

The Library Committee met on Tuesday evening last, Mr C. H. Winny in tho chair. The secretary reported a cash balance in hand of £l2. It was resolved that a number of new books bo purchased at once, and that fresh purchases be made monthly at tho rate of'2os per month. Messrs H. N. Hawker" and W. Gault were appointed a selection committee. It was also decided that no further purchases of second-hand books bo made, and that magazines be issued to subscribers in future before being placed in tlio'public reading-room. * * • * *

The Senior' Cadets turned up in good numbers ou Wednesday ovening and put in a solid forty minutes' exercise under Lieutenant A. P. Hopkins on'the parade ground. Tlio muster was ■ exceptionally good, , and tho conduct and response on • tho part of the boys excellent. '

Tha Cadets cannot understand why they should be expected to pay los for a winter capo, which "is entirely necessary to their Work as Cadets. As Territorials, when' they are iu a better position to pay for uniforms, they are provided' with uniform and overcoat. The tax Seems absolutely unfair. TJig boys are training for the same purpose as the Territorials. They are required to put their drills in and deny thsmselves in many ways, aiid apparently receive:"no encouragement but the reverse. Why (should they or their parents be expected to find what is absolute necessary to J them as Cadets, and ■quite, unnecessary" and useless for any other - purpose P.

A motor-boat.race for a prize donated by, Mr, G. T. Hawlcer will be run over ■the, club course (weeds permitting) this 'afternoon, at 4.30. The proviso is necessary. Tho;willows along the riverbank aro /being denuded of their long trailing branches, weeds are boing cut and a general, clean-up taking place. The result is rather bad for powerboats. A fouled propeller is a subject for many " heated" remarks. The: motor-boatmen of New "Brighton are the most decorous of sportsmen and prefer to postpone the race to finding themselves in danger of using language. .•* * » *

A meeting of the members of the local Hockey' Club is convened for Thursday next, in the Fire. Brigade room, when projiosalg will be discussed for reorganising and re-naming tho club. ••« * « •

Jones was added to the committee.

It was formally reported that tho river carnival held on Saturday last would about clear itself. Mr V. J. Drake was appointed _ to interview Messrs Fullor regarding tho result of picture shows in which tlio club was interested, and empowered to accept the results on behalf of the club.

Captain Owles was specially thanked for his largo financial assistance to the club, and was made, a lifo member. To date, the sum of £'*lo had been obtained by tho aid of tho " Free of Debt" cards.

The decision of tho Works Committee tu uso a considerable quantity of metal in filling in the ruts in lark lioad will find much favour from the many users of this connecting road between north and south. The Council's activities in tho Herring Bay district should do much to assist the residents in that quarter. The road is now under construction, and this favourite bathing and felling spot will bo more accessible to the largo number of visitors who prefer to spend their time there instead of on the bench.
