LOCAL AND GENERAL.

The first visit to'Christchurch of the , new Governor of the dominion will be very fully described in the illustrations of next week's " Canterbury Times." The series of pictures, will be and will show the arrival of his Excellency and his suite at Lyttelton and at Christchurch. The levee at the .City Council Chambers will be finely portrayed, as will the ceremony in connection with the laying of the foundation stone of the King George Coronation Hospital. The interesting series of snapshots of " Picturesque Christ- ' church Residences " will be continued, and there will be a number of pretty views of Purau and other pictures of local interest. The journal's cartoonist will treat a selection of topical subjects in caricature form and will also give a page sketch of Admiral G. KingHall, commander of the Australasian Fleet. The presentation to. Pilot Day, of Sumner, will be dealt with, and there will be ,'a good photograph of the members of the new ,Riccarton Borough Council. Two excellent panoramic pictures of . the Basin Reserve and Rona Bay, Wellington, several illustrations from tliQ war area in Europe, and a number dealing with general subjects will' complete the pictorial portion of next week's " Canterbury Times." The reading pages will be replete in all respects, and the fiction departement will be well stocked with serial and short stories.

Professor W. T. Mills and Mr R. Semple will deliver addresses at His Majesty's Theatre to-morrow evening. The weather in most parts of the dominion this morning was good- Rain was jrom Westport, Greymouth and .liluff.

The Waim ikariri ■ (north and south) was reported clear this morning. The Rangitata was iishable, and the R-akaia and Waitaki were dirty. It has been officially announced that the Government has decided to recall Mr J. Graham Gow, commercial agent for New Zealand in Canada. Waiters, of Ashburton, secured 1327 marks, instead of 1237, the number given in the Department's return. Next Saturday the Creche and Kindergarten Association will take up a collection in the streets of. the city in order to provide funds to carry on the work of that institution. Four kindergartens have already been started in the suburbs, which are proving a great boon to very many families. The Horticultural Society will hold a sweet pea, flower and fruit exhibition in the Art Gallery on Wednesday, February 12. As this is not one of the Society's regular annual shows th< admission is only sixpence, and th« takings, less expenses, will be distributed among the prize-winners in proportion to the points gained by tlieim. v Superintendent Napier, of Dunedin, reports that for the six months ended December 31 there were thirty-six fires in buildings in the city. The insurances on the property affected totalled £143,800. The loss, however, to the insurance companies was only £93B®. The value of the unimproved was £23,545, while tho loss was only £176. The heaviest individual loss wna to Findlay and Co., £5200. To dat® there have been eighty-nine calls, of which forty-two were serious fires.
