NEW ZEALAND ASSOCIATION

CANTERBURY CENTRE

A meeting of the Canterbury Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association was held at the municipal baths last night; present— Messrs E. Nordon (in the chair), C. Bryant, W. Brunsdcn, E. Eldridge, W. Johnson, J. Knudsen, T. O'Keefe, L. A. G. Rich, G. T. Robinson, 51. Mooney, H. M'D. Vincent, G. Sanderson, A. M'Donald, F. Stokes, D, AUingharn, L. Penlington, J. Toomey, E. Foster, C. Morris and J. Watkins.

Correspondent was read from the Rangiora Club appointing Mr E. Nordon, tho Somerlield Club appointing Mr Penlington and the Christchurch Club appointing Mr J. Watkins delegates to the Centre. The appointments were confirmed.

The Sumner branch of tho Royal Life Saving Society wrote asking the Centre to appoint a representative to n conference with the Sumner Borough Council regarding bathing costumes to be use'd on Sumner beach.

The secretary reported that, owing to short notice, it had been found impossible to appoint a delegate. Messrs Bryant and Stokes were appointed, delegates to attend any future meetings held at Sumner. The secretary reported that at a meeting held last week a new club had been formed at Woolston, with about forty members. It was decided to recommend the Council to affiliate tho Woolstori Club. Messrs E. Eldridge and L. .A: G. Rich were appointed delegates to the conference to be held at Wanganui during the progress of the New Zealand championships. The programmes of the Wharenui and Opawa Clubs were approved. The Domains Board wrote asking if the Centre could arrange for ( a stall at thp Domain Fete on February 20. It was decided that the Centre should take charge of a postcard stall at the fete. Messrs Rich, Eldridge, Vincent,' Ivnudsen, Bryant, Robinson, Stokes and Watkins were appointed a committee, to make arrangements for the stall. It was also decided to invite lady members of swimming clubs to assist.

The Hawke's Bay Centre wrote protesting against the action of the Council in awarding the championship meeting in 1914' to Nelson, in face of the decision of the conference that the meeting . should be held in Hawke's Bay. Mr Stokes, the Centre's delegate on the Council, reported that the rule on the point was that the championships should be held alternately in the North and South Islands, and it was the turn of a South Island Centre next year. It was decided that the Centre could not see its way to endorse .the Hawke's Bay protest. The Opawa Swimming Club forwarded an appeal against the East Christchurch team placed first in the Harris Cup competition, on.the ground that one, or more of the team started in the race before the previous' team mate finished his distance, especially in the case of 'the last relay, who was ruled to have started before his time by the judges. _ A report was received from the check starter stating,that, to the best of his knowledge, no member of the -East Christchurch team started before his tinie.. j ■ The chairman, who was one of t|:e fudges, said the judges had held a meeting after the race, and no pronouncement had been made by them to the effect that certain members of the East Christohurch team started before their time.'

An appeal against the decision of the referee in connection with the Interclub Handicap at the Lyttelton Club's carnival, in having the race swum .a second'time, without a proper interval, when, two of the competitors had met with an accident and not taken part in the first race, was ruled, out of order by the chairman.

It was decided to refer tlie case to tlie Council of the New Zealand Swimming Association. The. executive reported that since the last meeting of the Centre the Ashbtirton and Eangiora programmes liad been passed. February 15 had been granted to Wharenui, and March 8 to Rangiora. The executive had selected a team for the championship meeting at Wangainii, and had also selected a team for the Wigram Shield competition. Owing to the fact that Mr Solomons had lost the steamer tickets of the Sydney swimmers, the executive had decided to deposit the sum of £ls 15s with the Union Steam Ship Company for passages hack to Sydney, Mr Solomons to be responsible to the Centre. During the progress of the carnivals at the Tepid Baths, a collection had been taken up for the widow of Mr Atkinson, -who was drowned at Sumner on December 28. The renort was adopted.

• Messrs" W. E. D. Bishop and E. Nordon were appointed to act on a deputation to the City Council next Monday to advocate the building of another bath.

Mr L. A. G. Rich was appointed manager of the Canterbury team at _ the championship carnival at Wanganui.' The chairman said he had frequently observed at carnivals the friendly relations which existed between Canterbury and Wellington swimmers, and he desired to foster that feeling. During a recent visit to Auckland, he had purchased. a cup, whicli- would arrive in Christchuroh in a day or two. He intended to hand the cup to the Canterbury Centre as a trophy for an annual competition between the Canterbury and Wellington Centres, the details of the competition to be arranged later. It was decided to heartily thank Mr Nordon for his generous gift. The chairman referred to the action of the Royal Humane Society in awarding medals to two members of the life saving team in connection with'the recent drowning fatalities at Sumner. After discussion, a resolution was passed expressing regret at the action of the Royal Humane Society in connection with, the recent awards it licid made. The opinion w&s further cxpiesscd' that all future awards for life saving work should be made to teams, and not to individuals. CHAMPIONSHIP CARNIVAL. The following teams have been provisionally selected "to represent the Canterbury Centre in events,at the championship carnival at "Wanganui:—Polo team—G. Geinmell, C. H. H. Rich, "W. E. Cookson, L. Poison, J." Stirling. C. Atkinson, H. Y. Jerred and another; Flying Squadron—W. E. Cookson, C. Atkinson. 11. V. .Terred, J. Stir in?, L. Poison, P. Slapon. L. Annand and G. L. Bull. The" final selections will be made in Wanga- . nui.
