THE DEFENCE FORCES.

GENERAL ORDERS. General orders of the New Zealand Defence Forces, issued from headquarters, Wellington, on January 3, state that Captain the Hon R. H. Collins, D.5.0., Imperial General Staff, arrived from Great Britain on December 18, 1912, and has taken up duties at headquarters. Sergeants H. M. Wright and R. W. Guy have been appointed second lieutenants of the coast 1 defence detachment First Canterbury Regiment, and Sergeants H. H. Herring .and J. M'Knight .-have been appointed second lieutenant;; of the North Canterbury and Westland Regiment. Second lieutenant L. F. Corson is transferred from the New Zealand Garrison Artillery to the First Canterbury Regiment, and Lieutenant A. N. Oakey from _ that regiment' to tbe corps of engineers. Lieutenant E. R. Guthrie, First Regiment, has resigned his commission. The formation of a coast defence detachment of the First Canterbury Regiment, consisting of four infantry companies, with headquarters at Lyttelton, has been approved. The establishment of officers will be as follows: — Lieutenant-Colonel (1), majors (2), captains (3), lieutenants (4), second lieutenants (4). Dated November 11. 1912. The formation of "The King's Empire Veterans," with headquarters at Auckland, as an honorary reserve corps, lias also been approved. The folio iving awards of the colonial auxiliary forces officers' decoration have been gazetted :-.-Captain Robert George Cox, Third Auckland Regiment (" Countess of Ranfurlv's Own "); Captain John Lillie Gillies, retired list. The award of the colonial auxiliary forces long-service medal has been awarded to Chaplain the Rev W. S. Ben.n, New Zealand chaplains departmeant. A command staff tour For district commanders, brigadiers, coast defence commanders and their respective staffs will be held in Canterbury district, from January 29 to February 1, 1913.
