CHRISTCHURCH. Saturday, August 10. (Before Mr H. W. Bishop, S.M.) Drunkenness.— Four first offenders for drunkenness were each fined ss, in default twenty-four hours' imprisonment.—Michael Henry' Quinn, for a similar offence, was fined 10s, in default forty-eight hours' imprisonment. Through Drink.—James Middleton, for having used threatening language in Cash el Street whilst drunk, was fined 10s, in default forty-eight hours' imprisonment. On a further charge of. drunkenness he was fined ss, in defaxilt twenty-four hours' imprisonment. —John Turner, for threatening behaviour, was fined 10s, in default forty-eight hours' imprisonment. Thekt.—Frederick George Smith, alias Smyth, who pleaded guilty to the theft of £3, was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when called upon, conditionally upon his going to the Salvation Army Home for three months. An Old Offender—Mary Sheedy, charged with being an incorrigible rogue and vagabond, was convicted and discharged. Remanded.—Edward James Griffin was remanded to appear at Amberley on Wednesday, on a charge of false pretences, the amount obtained being £3 10s. An Undesirable.—Leonard Horton, an immigrant, who arrived in the dominion six months ago, was charged with having failed to account for various sums of money entrusted to him, amounting to £8 6s 9d. Chief-Detec-tive Bishop said that accused had been employed as a traveller by Flewellen and Co. He went about the country. a.nd on his return lodged a number of bogus orders ivith his employers. He also retained payments which were due to the firm. He was arrested at the Bluff as he was leaving New Zealand. He was also charered with theft from his employers. The Magistrate sentenced accused on two of the charges to six months' imprisonment, cumulative, and on each of the other charges to three months' imprisonment, the sentences to be concurrent.
