TRAMWAY SHELTER.

A MORE SUITABLE BUILDING

URGED BY THE MAYOR

The- tramway shelter in Cathedral Square is still the subject of a good deal of discussion in the city, and thofco who aro intem>ted in tho movement to improve tho appearance of tho shelter aro looking forward to tlu> action that will bo taken by tho City Council on Monday night, in regard to the Beautifying Association's application for a grant. At the discussion on the. shelter at yesterday's meeting of the Tramway Board comparisons wore made between utilitarian ideas and artistic taste. On. this aspect of the nutation, tho Mnvor (Mr J. J. Doupall), in an interview this morning, said that there was no doubt that the citizens must have a shelter in tho Square. Its utility was highly appreciated, and an attempt to completely removo it would lead to emphatic protests. On the other hand nobody could claim that- the building was a thing of beauty. It was regrettable that, an artistic design was not obtained when the shelter Mas erected. If the city had a, real regard for the aesthetic side of things it would not tolerate the present structure for a moment. A plan should be prepared for a building which would harmonise with the ScpiarOj would shelter tramway passengers and would bo available for parcels and for a telephone exchange. As long as the Godloy Statu© was allowed to remain in its present por-ition it would be difficult to erect a suitable building that would not in'feivi with tho statue. Mr Stager's sc.i'cjTic to obtain a design for beautifying tho whole Square was an excellent one and he felt that the prlnrrinlo ought io be nflii'iueil by both the City Council aiid tho Trwiiwiw. Board.
