MRS SUN YAT SEN.

Mrs Sun Yat Sen, wife of the Chinese who was head of the successful revolution and who resigned the office of first President of tlie Chinese Republic in favour of Yuan Shih Kai. is a very attractive little woman. William Maxwell, a writer for the " Daily Mail," who is taking in China on his way back to England from the Durbar, vouches for it. He describes her thus:

" Just a dainty little lady with sweet, smiling lace and' n grace and charm that make willing slaves. The simple robo of pure white threw into strong reliof the clear, olive tone of the complexion and tho glossy black hair unadorned and smoothed back from tho shapely forehead. Mrs Sun Yat Sen might bo a beautiful nun if her face did not shine with the happiness that is of this world also." Mrs Sun \ T at Sen has not accompanied her husband in his wandrrings. She was not with him when he was hustled into the Chinese Legation in London and kept a close prisoner until a note hidden m a coal-scuttle startled the British people into indignation. She is a stranger alike to Europe and America.

"I have two daughters who have been my care," sho explained. " They are being educated after the manner of English girls." But if Mrs Sun Yat Sen has taken no active part sho has none the, less suffered in the cause oi' the revolution.

''For years the cause has separated me from my husband, on whose head there has been a price. My married life has been filled with vague terrors and active alarms. .But never for a moment have I lost faith in tho success of our sacrifice,"' she said.

The interview took place at Penang, where Mrs Sun Yat Sen and her daughters have been living for more than a year.
