ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES
FATAL ACCIDENT. INQUEST. An inquest was held at the Hospital to-day, before Mr H. W. Bishop, district coroner, 'in regard to the death of Joseph Richard Rosewarne, who was riding on a dray at Opapuki, near Kaiapoi, and fell, the wheel passing over him, and causing injuries from which ho died. Joseph M'Oielland, grandfather of the deceased, stated that the latter was seventeen years of age. Frank Robert Sandford stated that he was carting hay with the deceased yesterday. The dray deceased was driving was loaded with hay. "Witness" was walking alongside. The hay was well tied. Rosewarno was seated on the top of the hay. Another man, named Hunt, got on to the horse to climb up to the top. Rosewarne gave him his hand to help him up. Hunt slipped and fell to the ground. Rosewarno then slipped off the hay on to the ground, and one wheel passed over his back.
Dr T. T. Thompson, house surgeon, stated that tho deceased's condition when he was admitted to tho Hospital was too bad to allow an operation to be performed, and he died from the effects of the injuries caused bv the accident.
Tho coroner returned a verdict that death resulted from injuries caused by falling off a loaded drav.
