William Chirk Russell was horn in Now York on February 24, 18-14, his father being Henry Russell and his .mother Isabella Lloyd, both of Birmingham families. Ife was educated at Winchester, and from the age of thirteen to twenty-one he was in the British mereli'ant .service. Then ho took to literature, and during his career as a'novelist lie lias published one almost every year since 1874, besides many short stories, all more ( or less tales of the sea and sea life. He was a native of Leeds, and arrived at Nelson in 1854. Fie went, to the "West Coast in 1857, where he met Mr James Mackay, .inn., in 1860, who bought from 8,000,000 to 10,000,000 acres from the Natives for £l5O rash, one ton of Hour, half a ton of sugar. altogether valued at £3OO. He visited Christehurch in 1863 and wrote a letter to the " Lyttelton Times " which caused a. rnsh to set in. lie bonglil, 2200 acres in the Little Grey Valley, which he improved, and has resided on the property since. Tt carries 1800 sheep and 300 head of cattle, and the buildings are like English farmhouses. He. visited England in 1886, and subsequently bought 2000 acres at Pakarae, / Poverty Bay., but sold it recently at an enormous profit, as it was vastly improved. Pie leaves a widow, four sons and six daughters, including Mrs James Marshall, wife of the M.L.C. He died peacefully, aged eighty-two.
