The sale of the wrecked sfoamer Knight of Hi) George, which piled up on tho reef off Kukiilofa, Tonga* last August through being driven out of hei' course by ocean currents, produced ft little excitement in the Tongan capital last month. The auction of the vessel, which had on board, among- other cargo, o- million feet of Oregon timber, drew an interested crowd of prospective bidders and curious onlookers. Before tho disposal of tlio hull and main contents, about thirty odd lots, including Beveral of the steamer's boats, were knocked down, tho lifeboats fetching £6 6s and £0 13s respectively, while the gig (a newftr boat) realised' £l9. The sale of the vessel herself started at £IOO, and fro7ll £l5O crept up in fives to £Boi>, at which price she became the property of a Tongan syndicate, .for whom !Mr J. Crawley arrived in Auckland on Saturday to purchase plant for salving cporationH. Should the weather hold good there will be a handsome profit in the venture. as the cargo of timber alone is worth » great deal more than the price given.
