INDUSTRIAL EXHIBITION

VISITED BY LORD AND LADY ISLINGTON. The Trades and Labour Council's In-r dustrial Exhibition was visited this morning by his Excellency the Governor and Lady Islington, Captain Estcourt also accompanying the party. Punctually at 11 a.m. tho party arrived and was welcomed by Messrs J. Young, F. Meyer, G. W. C. Moon., A. Paterson and 0. Blake. A close inspection of the various stalls was made, their Excellencies being evidently much interested in the 'Trades and Labour Council's pioneer effort. Lady Islington was particularly attracted by Mr H. Lawrence's very fine display of amaryllis.' After seeing the various exhibits tho party adjourned to the concert hall, where a picture entertainment for the benefit of the Richmond School children was in progress. Tho party's entry was heralded by the singing of'the National Anthem ]>y the children, who also gave hearty cheers for their Excellencies. After witnessing the industrial film relating to the Kaiapoi Woollen Mills, his Excellency briefly addressed the children.

"Lady Islington and I," he said, " are very pleased to have the opportunity of being amongst you children on this occasion, and I am delighted to Ree so many happy faces from tho Richmond School. You are evidently enjoying the kindly advantages offered by tho excellont exhibition, and not onty aro you having a very enjoyable time, but I am sure you are gaining instruction from tho pictures which aro being shown to yon on the canvas. Many of you aro looking on scenes of commercial and industrial life in which in a few years you will yourselves be occupied. Tt is right that the young people should take a particular interest m the views which aro so clearly and vividly displayed, illustrating tho different stages in the manufacture of some of the most' important products of local industry. It gives_ an opportunity to combine pleasure with instruction, and such opportunities should always bo taken advantage of. In conclusion, on behalf of Lady Islington and myself, I havo again to express to you how pleased we have been to meet sucli a largo body of the future generation of Christchurch, and I wish you all God-speed in your work and good fortune and a successful career in future years." The party left the hall amidst ringing cheers from the children.
