WORK AND WAGES.

The half-yearly meeting of members of the Canterbury Typographical Union was held in the Trades Hall on Saturday evening. Mr J. Woolcock (president) was in the chair, and there was a fair attendance of members.

Th© half-yearly report stated that trade had been good during the previous six months, and practically every member had been in work. As an outcome of representations by a deputation to the Master Printers Association iu regard to offering inducements to apprentices to attend the typographical class at the Technical College, that body had agreed to subsidise up to a stated amount any sum donated by the Uni-on for the same purpose. As a result of negotiations between the New Zealand Federated Typographical Association and the New Zealand Master Printers' Association, a conference would be held in Wellington on August 24 between representatives from both bodies for the purpose of endeavouring to frame a dominion agreement. It was stated that the Union had decided to make a display at "the coming Exhibition pro moted by the Trades and Labour Council, and promises of support had been given by various printing firms in the city. The balance sheet showed that the receipts had been only £2 Os 6d more than the expenditure. A motion expressing regret at the death of Mr T. E. Taylor, M.P., Mayor of Cbristchurch, and of sympathy with Mrs Taylor and family in their bereavement. was carried, members standing. A deputation from the Trades and Labour Council waited oi. the meeting for the purpose of soliciting financial assistance in the way of a loan towards the preliminary expenses of the Exhibition. Tt was decided that the sum of £SO should he lent to the Council. Mr J. W. Roberts was elected a member of the Board of Management in place of Mr J. A. I oney (resigned). Resolutions from the Nelson branch of the Amalgamated Society of Carpenters and Joiners in regard to the untaxing of labour and _of labour products were ordered to lie on the table.
