TRAMWAY BOARD.

YESTERDAY'S MEETING. The Christ-church Tramway Board met yesterday; present —Messrs u. T. Booth (chairman), H. Pearce, Y». Reece, J. A. I'lesher, 1). Sykes, S. A. Staple. 1 }, W. Hill and A. \Y. heaven. The chairman stated that a serious breakdown had occurred in the generators on Saturday., but it had now been repaired. The Windmill Road line was approaching completion and work had also been commenced on the double track in Moorhoufte Avenue and on the feeder line on Rackthorne Road.

Accounts for £BI2O 8s 4d were passed for payment. The Works and Traffic Committee reported that it had received a, deputation from the General Labourers Union, which asked the Board to increase the wages for general labourers above the rate fixed in the Arbitration Court awards. The committee had resolved that in view of existing aw aids and of the fact that forthcoming works, had been calculated and loans sanctioned by ratepayers had been arranged upon existing rates, it could not recommend tliat the increased rate asked for should be granted. The committee had considered the request of a r £^ ell j deputation that the Edgeware Road line should be extended. The committee regretted that it could not see its way to- recommend that the extension should be made, as it did not think that it would pay to do so. The calling of tenders for the construction of the Hackthorne Road tramway had been delayed in consequence of arrangements not'having been vet completed by t ie Cashmere trustees with regard to tlie new road, along which it was proposed to take the tramway, but it was hoped that the matter would be satisfactorily completed at a very early date. The town clerk wrote stating that the Works Committee of the City Council had given instructions to proceed with the construction of the new street connecting Wordsworth ana Gladstone Streets, Sydenham, and addin** that if it was the Board s intention to" remove the tramway from Lowson street to the new street the committee would be glad if the Board would push on the work at once. The matter was referred to the Works Committee. The Dunedin City Council wrote asking for plans of % combination cars recently' constructed; as they had been recommended by the Public Works Department. ~ It was agreed to accede to the reqiMr T. J. W. Shand wrote asking for a light to be placed at the Waimn stopping place on the Riccarton Road, as the spot was dangerous. Mr Staples moved that he and the general manager should report on the spot, and the motion was carnec. The Canterbury Women s Institute forwarded a resolution stating that it trusted that the Board, when giving orders for new cars, would make arrangements for much tower steps on some of them, as the present high steps constituted a menace to the safety ol women. , , ~ It was decided to reply that the Board had considered the matter fully. Mr C. G. Baker, of Timaru, wrote stating that he had an invention to protect hatpin points, and if the Board " would give him a good job on its works" it could enforce the use of his invention. . . The Mavor of Sumner wrote complimenting and thanking the Board tor its electric Coronation car display and Miss Shirtcliffe wrote on behalf of the children of the Addmgton School, thanking tlie Beard for an acdition. to a strong belief in Fairyland, through the car. _ In moving that the letters should bo received, Mr Pearce said that the remarkable display had been made at the instigation of Mr Reece. _ Mr Reece said that the engineer and I staff deserved all the credit <or the ' work, and the Board passed them a hearty vote of thanks. The Linwr.od Citizens' Association wrote stating that the Board had overlooked the erection of a lamp at Ellis 9 Corner, Linwood. as promised m 3 909. The minutes showed that the application had been refused several times on the score of expense, and it was decided to forward a copy of the minutes to the Association.
