CHRISTCHURCH. Tuesday, Mat 2. (Before Mr H. W. Bishop, S.M.) Drunkenness.—Three first offenders were each fined 5s and costs, in default twenty-four hours' imprisonment. Theft.—-Frederick Harwood, a young man, pleaded guilty to a charge of having stolen a bicycle valued at £lB, and a cycle lamp valued at 17s 6d. Mr Alpers explained that the accused had been to the Lyttelton, regatta, and had missed the last train for Leeston. He had walked three-quarters of the way there, and had found the bicycle abandoned at the roadside. He had failed to report the find to the police, and had attempted to leave for the North Island with the cycle. Chief Detective Bishop stated that the cycle had been stolen from Christchurcii. Accused, when arrested, had said that he had bought the cycle from a man at Dunsandel. The Magistrate remarked that accused's story was a very thin one. As the accused was a first offender, he would give him another chance, and inflicted a fine of 40s and costs, in default one month's imprisonment. Maintenance.—Daniel M. Baines, charged: with disobedience of a maintenance order requiring him to contribute 15s _ per week towards the support of his five children in an industrial home, Btated that he was a casual labourer at Lyttelton, but had been unable to get work. He was expecting a sum of money from England in Juno. He was ordered to pay the arrears before the end of the week, in default three months' imprisonment.—Frederick Wilson Steele, of Auckland (Mr Leathern), applied for a variation in a maintenance order. The amount of the surety for compliance with the order was reduced from £IOO to £75, the balance to be held by the Court and distributed as the order falls due. —Richard Stevens (Mr Leathern), charged with disobeying a maintenance order for 30s per week towards the support of his wife and five children, was ordered to pay the arrears within two weeks, in default three months' imprisonment, the amount of the order to be reduced when the arrears had been paid. *!
LYTTELTON. Tuesday, Mat 2. (Before Mr M J. Miller, J.P.) Alleged Theft.—Hui Rebu, a young half-caste, was charged with having' on or about April 20, removed from the dwelling of Thomas E. Tolputt, at Woodend, a suit of clothes, valued at £2 10s. Sergeant Ryan applied for a remand until Thursday next, at Rangiora. The remand was granted. In reply to a question, Rehu stated that ho did not desire bail.
