NORTH ISLAND v. SOUTH ISLAND. THE NORTHERN TEAM. [Peh Press Association.! WELLINGTON, September 16. Tho North Island Rugby team to meet the South Island at Christchurch on Saturday, September 2-1, is as follows:—O'Leary, Dive, Mitchinson, Evenson, Kaipara, M'Leod, Roberts, Avery, Taylor, Osborne, Francis, Cunningham, Tamu, Haywood and M'Kellar. OPINION IN DUNEDIN. [tXOU OVU CORBESfONDENT.J DUNEDIN, September 16. Surprise is expressed here that, while the South Island selectors deferred to the wishes of tho minor Unions for representation, the smaller Unions have been practically ignored by tho northern selection committee. THE CANTERBURY TEAM. Tt is understood that P. Burns an« and W. J. Morgan will be sent north to-night to strengthen the Canterbury team in its match against Wellington to-morrow. SELECTORS AT CROSS PURPOSES. There appears to have been some misundersta"ndir.g in regard to the selection of the teams foAhe inter-island match to be played here on Saturday week. The impression in football circles was that this year the selectors would as far as possible exclude the better known city players, especially New Zealand representatives, and would give the leading players from the smaller Unions an opportunity to show their quality. Writing before tho selection of the teams, the " Ota go Witness" had the following paragraph : " The selectors of tho South Island team to meet the North Island have decided to give the young and littleknown players a chance, wherefore it need create no surprise to find the names of many oromising players omitted from the selection." In the case of South Island team the understanding was not strictly adhered to, and two or three leading representatives were included. The North Island selectors, however, seem to have nude no attempt to encourage the smaller Unions. The impression here is that they chose the strongest available, side. In the circumstances the game is scarcely likely to attract the interest that would otlerwiso have attached to the fixture.
