AUSTRALIAN TIMBER INDUSTRY.
PROTECTIVE TARIFF ASKED FOR United Press Aesocis-tiou—By Electric Telegraphs-Copyright. (Received August 3, 8.35 a.m.) MELBOURNE, August 3.
A deputation representing the timber industry asked Mr G, F. Tudor, Minister of Customs., to urgently consider the rearrangement of duties on imported timber, as the cheapness of the imported article hampered the trade, while vast forests of native timbers were neglected ami sacrificed. Queensland could 6upp!y a certain amount of butter-box timber, but as it could not fuly meeu the demand the deputation was prepared to consent to New Zealand timber being imported free for this purpose. The deputation submitted a schedule of proposed duties, including 4s per hundred superficial feet on New Zealand pine, other than that required, for butter boxes. Mr Tudor replied that it was quite possible that next session there would be a general re-opening of the tariff question, and ho would do his best to see that the timber industry received consideration.
