DOMAINS BOARD.

The Christchurch Domains Board met this afternoon; present—Messrs H. J. Beswick (chairman), 0. Allison, Gr. Harper, W. H. Cooper and G. Scott. > A proposal, recently formulated by Mr H. G. Ell, M.P., to ask Parliament for power to charge for admission to domains lapsed for want of a seconder. Mr Beswick said that as many of the members were opposed to the proposal it would be futile to continue with it. The Board had lost £2OO that had previously been given by the Selwyn County Council and £l5O a year from rents," and from a revenue point of view matters /would soon, be in a serious position. . It was agreed to leave the matter of revenue m the hands of the chairman and Mr Harper. - , / An application from the Woolston Band to play in the domain gardens on Sundays for the purpose of collecting for its funds towards attending a contest in Dunedin was read. Mr Cooper said that he was in favour of bands' playing in the domain, and suggested that if a collection were taken boxes could be placed outsido the gates. : ' The chairman said that it was desirable for bands to play in the gardens. ' * Mr Allison moved that the band should he given permission to play on Sundays, provided that no collection should' bo made at gates, on paths or anywhere within 100 yards of whero the band was playing. The motion was carried, and the matter of giving permits to bands for different days was left to the chairman.

A donation of £2 2s worth of seeds from Mr J. Montgomery was received with thanks.

Mr C. H. Gilby and Mr S. Smith wrote on behalf of Fendalton residents, asking the Board to reconsider its decision to- close the path from the Armagh Street Bridge to Carlton Mill Road to cyclists. The chairman said that there were three gates, .>nc- of them on the bridge near Carlton Mill Road, to contend with, and they were being opened constantly. The time saved by using the path was infinitesimal compared with going round Carlton Mill Road. In any case, the path as used by cyclists was a • danger to pedestrians. There should surely be some way of going over the Park without meeting cyclists. It was only a question of waiting a little while, and no one could be got to walk over the Park at all. Paths for cyclists were sufficiently supplied already. The Board decided that it could not alter its decision on the matter. The head gardener reported that he had appointed a man as permanent ranger m the parks. The new native section of the gardens was being got into order. Routine work was Tbeing carried out as usual. ,

Authority was given the head gardener to carry out the erection of a new bridge over the Avon near the United bowling green, for heavy cartage, at a cost of £IOO.
