OLD COLONISTS' ASSOCIATION.

The Canterbury Old Colonists' Association met yesterday ; present—Messrs W. Guise Brittan (in the chair), G. R. Hart, J. 0. Andersen, F. C. B. Bishop, J. L. Scott, E. Moseley, E. R. Waite, W. D. Lawrence, J. E. March and V. Mathias. Mr G. W. Russell, M.P., was unanimously elected a member of the committee subject to his consent. A letter was received from the manager of the "Lyttelton Times" Company with regard to the request of the Association concerning negatives and views of early Canterbury. The letter stated that all negatives would be carefully packed in the company's strong room, and would be available when required. It was decided to reply thanking the manager for his courtesy. Mr Lawrence presented to the Association the original printed copy of the journal of the first journey from Nelson to the Port Cooper Plains by Mr Edward James Lee, in December, 1851. Mr B. Lane sent word that he had the original contract for the Lvttelton tunnel, signed by Mr J. Holmes and the Hon J. Richardson, and also several photographs and documents relating to the early days, which he would be pleased to offer to the Assooaition. i A hearty vote of thanks was passed to Mr Lane, and Mr J. C. Andersen was appointed to wait upon Mr Lane and select articles from the collection for the Association. Mr Moseley produced a letter from Lord Kitchener written during his visit to CTiristchurcli. Mr Moseley had written to Lord Kitchener stating the aims of the Association and the Mu-i seum, and the letter, written in Lord I Kitchener's own handwriting, ran as follows: — " Dear Sir, —I wish the Canterbury Museum every success. I have greatly enjoyed my visit to Christchurch.— Kitchener." The letter was accepted with thanks. A vote of sympathy was passed to Dr Hight in his recent illness, and he was congratulated on his recovery.
