CHRISTCHURCH. "Wednesday, ArmL 15. (Before Mr V. G. Day, S.M.) Drunkenness. — On© first offender, for having been drunk, was fined 5s and costs, in default twenty-four hours' imprisonment, and" another first offender, who was found drunk on the railway station platform, was fined 10s and costs, in default forty-eight hours' imprisonment. Prohibition Order Bkoken. — Daniel Carney was fined 5s and costs, in default twenty-four hours' imprisonment, for hayings been drunk, and 20s and costs, in default seven days' imprisonment, for having obtained liquor during the currency of a prohibition order. An Unfortunate. — Edith Cfeevy (Mr : Leathern) was charged with having ! solicited prostitution. She admitted the offence, and, after listening to an appeal tor leniency by Mr Leathern, the Magistrate convicted and discharged her. Remanded. — Edward Myers (Mr Leathern) was charged with having assaulted and robbed John Henry Hill of 14s. He was remanded to April 23. A Charge of .Theft. — Le Roi Mar-' shall was charged with having stolen a gentleman's gold watch, a gold chain .and a silver cigarette-holder case, valued at £15, from the person of George Hubert Elder. The accused, a boy of about nineteen years, stated that he had purchased the articles from a sailor. The- accused's' police list showed that he was at present serving a Bentence, and stood, committed for sentence on three charges of house-break-ing. \Tarshall was sentenced to six mpnths' imprisonment, the term to run concurrently with that now being served. Registry Office Feks. — Thomas W. "West was charged, on the information of the Department of Labour, with being the holder of a license under the Servants' Registry Act, he did demand from R. Rundle a fee greater than that specified by the. Act. The defendant stated that the fee was charged owing to a misunderstanding. He was fined 10s and costs.

Shop an» Offices Act. — James Butcher was convicted and discharged on a charge of having failed to -close his shop for a half day on March 19, as required by the Shop and Offices Act. J. J. Kavanagh, licensee of the New Zealander Hotel (Mr Hoban) admitted that he had not given his barassistant a regular half day off. Counsel foT the defendant said that the hotel assistants arranged between themselves in regard to their holidays, and some had more time off than that required by the Act. The Magistrate convicted Kavanagh and discharged him. Dismissed. — Andersons, limited (Mr Wilding) were charged with having accepted a premium of £50 from Samuel Brooking, in consideration of their teaching his son the trade of an engineer. The defence was that the money had been paid over two months ago, and the offence, if there had been an offence, had occurred then, beyond the time of limitation under the Factories Act, 1907. Mr Hagger, for the Labour Department, said that th© premium was in respect of a five 'years' contract, and the payment actually extended over that period. The Magistrate upheld Mr Wilding's contention, and dismissed the case. After Hours. — Albert Baldwin (Mr Cunningham) was charged with having failed to close his boot and shoe shop at 6 p.m. on April 1, as required by the Shops and Offices Act. Mr Hagger showed that after 7 p.m. on April 1 the defendant had allowed a man to enter his shop and had delivered to him a pair of boots. The defendant was fined 20s and costs.

Shop and Offices Act. — Robert Warden Todd (Mr "Williams) was fined 10s and costs for having failed to close his shop at 10 p.mi on April 4.
