When steel is exposed to the action of sea- water and the weather it is said to corrode at'' the rate of an inch in ipighty-two years ; an inch of iron under the same conditions corrodes in 199 years. When ©xpoeed to fresh water fcnd the weather the periods are 170 for steel and 630 years for iron.
