FIRES.

' AUCKLAND, December 23. About 1.20 s tliis morning an operator passing a small room adjoining the telephone exchange, post office buildings, noticed smoke coming under the door. He at once gave an alarm, but there was considerable difficulty in combating the outbreak on account of the volumes of smoke pouring from the room. The staff managed to get the outbreak under control just after the arrival of the fire brigade. The origin of the fire ia so far a complete mystery. The room was somewhat damaged, the walls being charred, and a quantity of papers suffered through fire and water.
