Mr Justice Denniston was entertained by the members of the legal profession in Auckland prior to his departure for the south. The speeches were wholly eulogistic and sincere, and regret was expressed at the Judge's approaching departure. Mr Walter Samson, o^f Christchurch, has been appointed manager of the Wellington Working Men's Club. Mr Samson was formerly secretary for Warner's^ Hotel, Limited, and subsequently licensee of the Criterion Hotel. At a meeting of the committee of the Canterbury Rugby Union Mr G. H. Mason, acting on behalf of the Oriental Club in Wellington, presented Mr P. Cleary with' a gold chain. Mr Cleary, who is a member of the Oriental Club, was recently transferred to ChnstchuTch, and his clubmates were anxious to give him a memento of their association in sport. Mr W Jordan, president of the Oriental Club, was present at the gathering. Mr "R. Speight lecturer on geology at Canterbury College, has been elected a Fellow of the Geological Society of London.
