Germany has agreed to submit to arbitration the dispute between the Portuguese Government and Prince Hohenlohe, in connection with the proposed sanatorium at Madeira. A German syndicate, with Prince HohenloOie as president, obtained a concession, to build a sanatorium on conditions under which it practically controlled the island. As a result of an. agitation by British business men in Madeira the concession N was cancelled. The syndicate claimed! damages for tiie cancellation. A SCIENTIST HONOURED. LONDON, December 20. Cambridge University has conferred a doctorship of science upon Professor CaTslaw, of Sydney University, in recognition of his work in applied mathematics. M'ARTHUR'S CREDITORS. A meeting of W. and A. M' Arthur's Manchester creditors approved of the liquidators' proposals. (Received December 21, noon.) A PROFESSORIAL APPOINTMENT. Professor Picken, of Glasgow, ias been appointed Professor of Mathematics at Victoria College, Wellington. A LARGE STEAMER. The Shaw, Savill and Albion Company has ordered a new steamer, capable of refrigerating 100,000 carcases.
