AUCKLAND, December 19. At the inquest on the body of the' headless child recently found' on the beach at Ponsonby medical evidence was to the effect that the head and both hands were missing, and had evidently been gnawed off by fish. There was no othei* sign of violence. The child liad been properly attended at birth, and had Uved from four to seven' days, its ageTmight be from two months to two weeks. The Coroner, Mr Gresham, refused to accept the evidence of a second autopsy ordered hy the police, because he had not been consulted, but a medical witness stated that there was no evidence of poison in the stomach. The inquest is proceeding. WAIUKU, December 19J An Austrian named Peter Go jack disappeared from his oamp on Monday morning, leaving a paper on thp table with his name and the sign of -the cross. Go jack's body was found yesterday in some thick scrub, death being the result of a gunshot wound. DUNEDIN, December 19. Mrs Stubberfield died suddenly at Palmerston South yesterday, presumably from heart trouble. Her husband is a carpenter at Christchurch. Shortly after ten o'clock last .night Chief Engineer Duniop of the turbine steamer Maori was badly scalded by one of the vessel's circulating pumps. He was passing the pump when it choked and the scalding water overflowed on to his back, neck and arm. He was attended to by a doctor on the boat, and was this morning taken to the Christchurch Hospital. He will .not be able to resume nis duties this week. No arrangements have been made as regards a temporary successor.
