With the object of encouraging students in a systematic course of study when unable to t^ke a degree the University College Council has decided to institute in connection with the .School of Mining and Engineering an aespciateship diploma, which may be gained either in mining or in metallurgy. Mr Justice Denniston granted a decree nisi in the case of Rebecca Marlborough v. Walter C. Marlborough. The passengers by the Manapouri from the islands included sixty workmen from San Francisco, via Tahiti*, who intend to settle in New Zealand'and Australia. They state that the big contractors in San Francisco refuse to pay thp wages demanded by the men, in the belief that cheaper labour will be available later on. The annual report shows that the new business for the year exceeded three millions, being two hundred and thirty thousand more than last year, and a record year for the Association The total income is nnicn c hundred thousand pounds, and • the expenditure five hundred and thirty thousand pounds. The amount added to the assurance fund, as the result of the year's wo'i-k---ing, is three hundred and seventy thousand pounds, the total funds being nearly five millions. The triennial investigation is now being made, and the members may anticipate a gpod bonus early in the New Year."
