CHRISTCHURCH. Fp.TDAY, DECEMBER 21. (Before Mr V. G. Day, S.M.) Drcnkennkss. — One female first offender was convicted and discharged, and one nialo was fined 5r and costs. — John Coninham, for drunkenness on tho Railway Station, was fined 10s and costs. Vagrancy. — Antonio Fernandez was charged with vagrancy. After the hearing of evidence, Fernandez was convicted and sentenced to three months' imprisonment, the warrant to be suspended if ho remained in the Samaritan Home lor that time. Illegally ox Premises. — John Nathin, found at night without lawful excuse upon th© premises of "The Pike" at the Exhibition, was convicted and discharged.. Thrkate.vinu Behaviour. — Sydney Lane, aged twenty-five years, who had made use of threatening behaviour in a public place, whereby a breach of the peace was occasioned, was fined 20s and costs, in default one week's imprisonment.—Patrick John Holland, for a similar offence, was similarly treated. Alleged Theft. — Christian Oberg was charged with the theft, on December 15, of a purse containing 16s, the property of George Jonee. It appeared that Oberg, Jones and. another were sitting on a seat in Cathedral Square. Jones seated that Oberg took the purse from his pocket and went off, saying "I'll bo back in a minute.' J Jones pursued Oberg, but did not catch him. Accused admitted sitting with Jones in the Square, but deniea having taken the purse. His Worship said it> was a case, of one man's word against another's. He gave the accused the benefit of the doubt and dismissed him. REMA>.-i)KD.— Harry Kilgour (Mr Donnelly) was remanded till to-mocrrow on a charge of being an idle and disorderly person within the meaning of the Police Offences Amendment Act of 1901, and with .habitually consorting with reputed thieves. — Joseph Nickolls appeared in answer to a charge of being an idlo and disorderly person, and • with oonsorting with prostitute aud persons having no lawful meanfe of support. He Wits remanded till Thursday, December 27. By-law Casks. — Mary Grose, Harriet Dougall, Richard Baldwin and Thomas Callaghan were each fined 10s and costs for riding bicycles upon footpaths. — For riding a cycie at night without a light attached Arthur Hopkins was lined 10s and oosts. — Francis Caverhill, for riding a motor-bicycle at a greater X>aeo than eight miles per hour* along Papanui Road, was lined 20s and costs. — Richard Wood and C. W. Dawson, for leaving a vehicle unattended in Lichfield btreet. wore each fined 10s and costs. — William Powers, a lad, for a similar offence, was convicted and ordered to pay ccsts. — John C. Wilson was fined lUs and ccsts for driving a vehicle at other than a walking pace across the intersection of Lichfield, Manchester and High Streets. — Nicholas Mailouk and H. A. Wilson, for hawking without being licensed, were each fined IGs and costs. Stray Cattle. — Joseph Illingworth was fined 10s and costs, and William Thomas and William Atkins Sts and oosts, for allowing cattle to wander on public roads. Disorderly House. — John George Warren and Emma Warren were charged with keeping a disorderly house. After hearing the evidence his Worship fined J. G. Warren £5 and oasts, and •dierniisjcd the charge against the woman. Dismissed. — Amelia Cook' (Mr Leathern) pleaded not guilty to a charge of using indecent language in public. It cc-ukl not be proved that any passersby heard the words alleged to have been used, although people in the houses on the opposite side of the road did hear them. His Worship said that in view of tho absence of proof that the words liad been heard by passers-by he would bo forced to dismiss the charge.— -Martha Gray was charged with a similar offence. After hearing the evidence the chargo was dismissed.
