SIR JOHN GORST.
RECEPTION IN AUCKLAND. [Per Pkess Association.] AUCKLAND, December 7. • Sir John Gorst was officially weloooned by the Mayor at the municipal buildings at noon to-day, in the presence of a large gathering of leading citizens, including the Hon G. Fowlds. The Mayor presented Sir John with a volume bound in morocco, containing the fire original numbers of the paper "Te Fihoiboi Moke Moke," published by him " at Waikato _in the early days. Sir John, replying, expressed his tlianks for his kindly reception throughout the colony, culminating at Auckland, andj his regret that circumstances would not permit him to spend his remaining days in New Zealand. He expressed wonder at the marvellous progress made by the country during the last forty years, and complimented the colonists on solving the problem of having a
semi-civil ieed race like the Maoris living on equal, terms with Europeans. He was pleased to find that the Maoris had full faith in the 'justice 'of the pakeha's treatment. The' old feeling of distrust had entirely disappeared and had been replaced by the most generous sympathy of the pakeha towards the Maoris, which reflected great credit on the colonists.
