MEETINGS OF SOCIETIES.
The Lyfctelton laterary and Debating Sociefcy opened the session witit a social gather«ing in St John's Presbyterian Schoolroom, la^t nig*ht. There was a very large ftttemjance, and the president j Ca.pta.in Manning, oqewpied the onair. ' Songs -were sung "'by Me^dames Gilanore and Clow, Mieaes Meikle, Smith, Hutchinson wnd Clark, and Messrs Clow, Rutland and 3ffatton. pianoforte isoloo were _played' by Misses Webb and Butter. The former lady acted ai> accompanist. 'Mr J. Gilmore gave^ two recitation*. Refreshments were .provided by the lady members of tie Society. The Mayor, Mr"S. : R. W«bb/oongratulated! the anenibers oh the successful opening' of the session, and announced that, at the next meeting, Mr G. Laurenson, M.H.R., would 1 give a lecture on Charles Dickens, with lantern illustrations.
