It is supposed that the Lydenburg bushrangers are part of a. gang of two hundred, recruited from, the rifftraff of Johannesburg and Pretoria. Four hundred constabulary and a number of civilian volunteers, who had been summoned to prevent an anticipated' attempt to loot the town, dispersed 1 the gang and tplit it into small parties, who fled to the back country.
