SIR E. BARTON'S REPLY TO MR REID.
United Press Association—By Elactrlo Telegraph—Copyright. (Received September 12, 8.49 a.m.) MELBOURNE, September 12. Sir E. Barton, in answer to the challenge from Mr G. H. Reid, defined the attitude of the Commonwealth Government on preferential trade. The Government, he said, would maintain the existing tariff against i Britain,- and would ask the country and j Parliament to increase the duties against i foreigners. By adoptingi freetrade it would be utterly impossible to give any advantage j to the country from which they had sprung.
