Reid, defined the attitude of the Commonwealth Government on preferential trade. The Government, he said, would maintain the existing tariff against i Britain,- and would ask the country and j Parliament to increase the duties against i foreigners. By adoptingi freetrade it would be utterly impossible to give any advantage j to the country from which they had sprung.
