Monday, June 15. (Before Mr J. T. Beck, J.P., and! Mr E. Beck, J.P.) Prohibition Obder.— -A prohibition order was issued) against a man, on the application of his mother. Stealing an Overcoat.— James Melwood, -with' three aliases, admitted having jtaken an overcoat, value 30s, the property of William M'Cabe, fro*., the s.s. Talune on Saturday evening. He said, however, that he had no intention of stealing the coat, but "had put it on "merely for a .bit, of vanity." He had been imprisoned! fdr. drunkenness in Ihinedin and was now on his way to join the Waimate, to which vessel he belonged. Sergeant Rutledge said tiat it was true enough that the accused was on his way to rejoin the Waimate as he had said 1 , but he bore a bad character. Since, 1899 he had been convicted fifteen times, eleven of them on charges of theft. The shipping companr had paid his fare from Duhedin to Wellington. The bench sentenced Kirn to three months' imprisonment -(Left sitting.)
