In point of fact, only three nations— England, France and Germany — have more extensive oversea dominians than the Lusitaninn kingdom.. The area of her colonies is 801,000 square miles, compared with England's 11,168,000, France's 4,367,000 and Germany's 1,027,000. Holland! comes next, with possessions covering 783,000 square miles. In point of population. and 1 trad© Holland, moreover, precedes Portugal, Java being one of the most densely populated regions of the world. Both Portugal andi Hollandi before 1898, ranked after Spain as colonial powers, but when the Pearl of the Antilles and the Philippines went, Spain, as far as colonies are concerned, was leftjj with nothing but a few "remnants " in West Africa.
