SATURDAY'S NOTES.

'"-''- (By CENTEEr " ' Considering the stats of the grounds, it would have been advisable for the Postponement Committee to postpone all matches pn Saturday. Sydenham Park • was not fit to play on. • Sydenham v. Christchurch was played on Sydenham Park. The ground was in a very bad state and completely spoilt all fasj; work. The home team had to play a man phort, through Vincent not putting in an appearance. The visitors had the best of the play and should have scored an. easy win, but fcheir " shooting " abilities were very weak". Murphy scored for Christchurch in -the firsfc spell, and Jacobs scored for Sydenham from a nice pass from Thiele, ■who dribbled the ball from the h!alf-wa.y flag. The game thus resulted in a draw. Chappel, G. Ford and C. Schmidfc were the pick of the Sydenham, backs, while Jacobs, Ford and Thiele worked hard' in the forward division. The Christchurch team is fast improving ; the backs are all playing well, their- defence being very strong. Spoug, Suckliug, Ridley, Murphy and Field were the most conspicuous for Christchurch. Mr'U. Lawrence was referee. Avon was defeated by Addington. A by one goal to nil. There was too much talking in this match, and some of the players were inclined to disagree with M? Stubberfleld's decisions. It would be as well if players were to remember that the referee is insole charge of Ij)ie game, and can, if he so desires, penalise for ■•defiance- of his rulings, whether they be right or wrong. In, most cases he gives up his Saturday afternoons at great inconvenience, and _ the least that can be asked is that his decision bo not questioned on the gronnd. Armstrong played well for the losers, and Bishop and Sloan for the winners. J. Hale, the lad who plays without his club's colours, again proved worthy of a place in a Senior team. iFrom his excellent strokes I should imagine that he has the making of one of our/ best hockey players. Tyasley, King and H. Halo were the most conspicuous of the 'others. Mr L. Burley reiereed. Sydenham A had an-easy win, the Christchurch team only mustering eight players. It'is surely the duty of all players to notify their captain if unable to play, so that he may arrange for his emergency men to roll up. G. Ford, of the Sydenham team, saved his team on Saturday by bis splendid defensive play. Eggleston, who played right-half for Sydenham, is slightly inclined to give "sticks." Spong is showing some fine play, both his attacking and defence being of a, high order. : C. Blackwell is striking old form. . He put in some very useful work on Saturday, and was weE-supported by Ridley and Laurenson.
