NOTES.

(Bt,HALF-BACK.\ Mr J. Wilson has been appointed on the Selection Committee, for the South Island team, in place of Mr J.- Burgess, who lias resigned. ' The Association, has included Auckland in the northern tour, which lias been postponed until August 17. This will give the Thursday players a; chance to get on with their competition. - The return Saturday v. Thursday match was played on the Prince of Wales* Birthday, The Polo Ground was rather greasy from the effects of a hard frost and very warm sun. The teams played.a s picked, with the exception of Mansfield, a Thursday Junior, who acted as substitute forEdscr.. -Dealing witjr individual players, T. Smith (in goal), of the Thursday team, was very safe, and saved his side on monj than one occasion.* P. Campbell, in the back division, defcervfls great praise. His cool manner of taking hits, repeatedly elicited applause. S. Jones and Miles were completely off colour. H. Rogers showed brilliant work with his stick/ Year, suffering from a sprained ankte, was not in his usual form. Of the forwards, Luxton, although smart at the bully-off, was right out of form. Simpson worked very hard, and is a promising player. Didcott, who is a regular hard grafter, and can shoot straight when in the circle, is one of the best forwards in the Thursday . competition. Mansfield found the game too fast. Coming to the Saturday team, White (in goal) was completely " off," his defence being bad and hitting powers very weak. G. Ford and ' Hunter (the fullbacks) did tfieir work well, the former in particular playing a. very safe game. Oram was undoubtedly the pick of the halves, his -placing being of excellent value to the forwards. Ridley, on the other wing, was good on the attack. • Griffin, who played centre half, was a. bit inclined to give "sticks," otherwise he played well. Jacobs and Ford, on the left wing, weTe the pick of the forwards, and did the bulk of the work, both showing clean and clever j work with their sticks. Ward and Ranford were not so strong on the right wing as was anticipated by Saturday supporters. A. Rankin, ' as centre forward, was far below representative form. This player does not put; the work in required by a, centre forward, being slightly inclined to get out of position. , ■/■ .
