The Queen's Cadets Corps is under orders to haitd in its Martini-Henry and Martini-Eiilield carbines, in order that it may be rerequipped. ' As soont as its present armament is in store, it will be supplied with new magazine Lee^Enfleld carbines of the latest type. The corps will then bs equipped in the best possible style, and it is to be expected that it will become as efficient a* it was a few years ago. The Sydenliaim Rifles will be inspected by Colonel Porter, at Sydenham, on Monday evening next, June 8. • The local .Boa/I'd, of Examiners will hold the quarterly examination of Volunteer officiirs for commissions, in the Garrison 1U brary on Wednesday. Three officers will be candidates.- An examination will, be held in Timaru on the same day, two candidates having signified their intention of presenting themselves at that centre. The following promotions have been made by the officer commanding tho Canterbury Natives Rifles :— Corporal Potter, to ba sergeant^ Lance-corporal F.D. Wilnon and Private E; Biltcliff, to be corporals ; Privates .T. ''S: Dacre, H. J. Herriott, H. T. Dyer and G- Searle tb be lance-corporals. At the meeting of the Christchurch Noncommissioned Officers' Club, ito be held in the City Rifles' orderly-room on Thursday evening, two sides, each consisting of five toien, will debate the question whether war causes civilisation to advance. Tho umpires will be Lieutenant-Colonel Day and Captain M'Gee, Acting District Adjutant.
