Simon (N.S.W.), 120yds . .0 The Sydney "Referee"thus describes Ihe race: — There was a hns-h ovc-r^Vbe vast audie-n-ce as the men were placed on tiheir marks. After one false -si-art, W-hitson being pushed off by his over-anxious attendant, they got away to the pistol shot. Whitaon Tjas up on Simon in a stride or two, ar.d Thorn switched on to Foster, Payne hanging to the lot, followed ■by Hopper, and thus tho front division of six was already formed, -and they were going at their best speed. The back lot of five were all moving well 'together, there being no gaps, and it was already aeen that there would be a deapei-aie race for supremacy between the two divisions. In tho first lap Simon- had enough of'^e pace, and dropped out of the hunt. Filsell had, 'however, been a bit slow in getting up pace for the back lot, and- Dick Mutton took up the contract, followed by Forbes and Morgan, with Walker ha-cging -to them. In the second lap Forbes, and Morgan, in turn, v/ere in front, and Filsell fell, luckily clear of 'the others. Of the front lot, Whitson, Foster and Thorn Jed in turn, the pace being very. hot. At the bell Thorn just Jed Payne and Hooper, of the frcnt bunah, while Morgan was cutting it out in front of Forbes and Walker of the back division, w'ho were fully, thirty yards away. Commencing the great final struggle Payne took up the running. At a desperate rate he led Hopper round by the •scoring board and- "by the tennis court. It was now obvious the back me-n could not prevail, -though Morgan and Walker were going great guns. Half a lap from home, Hopper, who had had an easy ride, shot to the front, and the race was all over. It was only a question' of, how much he would win by, and his pursuit by Walker, who finished well, was interesting. The champion was going the faster of the two, -but the goal was too near, and Hopper won amid great excitement and cheering by fifteen lengths. Thorn was a moderate third, and Forbes and Payne at intervals, tlie latter having tired right away after his 'big sprint. Time — lmin- SSJsec. This'is eaid to be a world's competition Record. Walker was second to'Scheps at the previous carnival in a Mile Handicap, run in lmin 54sec.
