The police here attach no (importance to the sensational statement published by the "Waimate Witness" with regard to the confession of a settler about the Kaiwarra tragedy. Tlie police believe the statement to be .imilar to one made by the same individual with a love affair added, which was inquired into about twelve months ago. The setbler is believed to be suffering from hallucination.
