A BRUTAL ASSAULT.
« AN OLD WOMAN DANGEROUSLY INJURED. [Per Pbkss Association.] AUCKLAND^ April 11. An assault, which will probably result in tho death of Mrs Morris, a resident of Mangere," over eighty years of age, occurred six weeks ago. Ifc has been kept from the Press till now. She was found unconscious on her bed on March 26, with severe injuries. There was an incised wound on the top of her head, bo^h eyes were bruised, there were wounds ofijfher face and on the back of her head, a gash on the left ear, and a bruise on her throat of such a character as to give the impression that she bad been garrotted. A portion of the left ear lobe was missing. She was removed to a private residence, and is now in a critical condition. Mrs Morris has made a statement to the effect that two Maoris ' entered- the house and violently assaulted her. She had £45 in the house, and was known by the neighbours to keep sums of money on the premises. Robbery ia supposed to have been the motive of the assault.
