SCHOOL COMMITTEES.
* The monthly meeting of the East Christchurch School Committee was held on Tuesday evening ; present — Messrs Clarke (chairman), Gerard, Jamieson, Walker, Archbold, Lumsden and Aiken. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs Franklin and Sapsford. The inward correspondence was received, and the outward approved. TlieSecretary reported that satisfactory arrangements had been made with Mr Guy Ormandy (one of the teachers) to give instruction iv swimming to the pupila during the present season. The Vis- j iting Commitbee reported, that the state of ' both schools was satisfactory, and that the combination of two class-rooms into one was a' great improvement; and would, no doubt, be greatly appreciated by the teaching staff. The ■head-mistress of the Phillipstown School reported that the average- j attendance for th«-pa*fc month was— Boys 114.3, girls 95.4; total 209.7; average j roll niunber-r-Boys 143.8, girls 123:3 ; total I 267.1. Sickness had 'been the chief cause in the difference tiietween the average attendance W the number on th* roll. The Visiting Committee was empowered to confer with, the head-mjstress in regard to calling a meeting in Linwood of paienta and others willing to assist in getting up an enteriairun&nt f or th& purpose of raising funds to puroh&se a piano for tho Ph\llipstown school. » T!he Bath Committee reported, that « number of large cards had been printed, giving full particulars abou^ the bath, and distributed in tba district." It was decided to. bold. a- picnic, and Messrs Franklin, Jamieson, Archbold, Sapsford and Lumgden were appointed a. sub»oommitt€o -to anake aarang«iaeiits. Ib was resolved to writa to the Boa;rd stating that the committea was ;n favour 0;f the trees in front of the infant school being cut down, as they interfered with the light and the spouting.
