THE WRECK OF THE ELINGAMITE.
THE INQUIRY. [Per Press. Association.] AUCKLAND, Dec. 23. The Elingamitfr inquiry was continued today. Peter Innes, a motorman, deposed that there were eleven men in the purser's boat. They were constantly baling to cope 'with the seas shipped and the leak. A man on the raft asked to bo taken off by the boat. The purser replied that he would take the stewardess, but she did not seem anxious to leave thei raft. H there had been any anxiety on 'her part she would have been transferred. He did 1 not hear Mr Wetherjlt speak about a rope or about towing the raft. They to-ldi the men in the raft to follow them.They could not go alongside, otherwise they would hare been swamped. This witness gave a new statement with regard to the missing- boat. He said they passed it in th* afternoon. Ifc seemd 1 very full and had probably, forty on board. The purser spoke to the third mate, who said he intended to try and reach Cape Maria V*vn Diemen, andi was very confident that Jie would succeed 1 . Witness understood that the purser asked the thirdi mats for provisions, and the latter replied that the captain had provisions'. Witness denied having stated), to Captain Read' that the third mate answered 1 uncivilly when 'he was asked for provision*.
