THE HALF-HOLIDAY.
XO THB EIUTOB. " \ , Sir, — As this is the daily topic, I venture a few ideas on the question. The proposal as to make a universal half -holiday on either of the two days now existing, i.e., Thursday or Saturday. The latter would be disastrous to trade for various reasons, fn the first place, how are our working class, who do not leave work till five o'clock and twelve^ o'clock respectively, to dc- their shoppiug? If those whc« want Saturday do their shopping on a day otftier than Saturday, it does -them no credit not to allow their fellow-workers the same privi- j lege. In the second place, would the bakers j and butchers deliver meat and bread on Saturdays? No. Why? Because one reason is that they could not deliver it to all their customers ,and therefore would not !be able to '•finish at one o'clock. Let a married supporter of the; Saturday movement try to keep meat and bread from Friday night (as would be the case) 1 till Monday, or even Sunday, especially in the summer time, and I think 'he would' soon change his mind. ISTthe third place, the adVocotes of Saturday say the farmer could easily change his day of coming to town. Could 'he? I would like to see the farmer who would leave his work in the middle of the week (especially at harvest time) and come to town, . just because a few workers want to have their awn way. I could give other reasons, bat will content mygelf by saying tihat if the pe&ple are against Saturday closing, let them rise up against the movement and force all to close on the days now existing instead of a few being open on Thursday and closing on other days, as is now the way. — I am,- etc., ANTI-SATURDAY. | Christchurch, Dec. 2^1902. ; j
