THE PIGEON LOFT.

♦ HOMING NOTES. (By RED CHEQUER.) The Christchurch Homing Society started the season's operations with a toss at Templeton last Saturday; Four new members haye joined the Society, and I think a very successful year can be looked forward to. It was stated at the annual meeting of the Petone Homing Pigeon Club that during the past year the club had flown twen-ty-four races, with an average entry of forty-five birds per race, the distance covered aggregating 2939 miles. The following officers were . elected for the ensuing year :— Patron Dr A. K. Newman ; yicepatrons, Dr Ml Ross and Mr R. C. Kirk j president, Mr W. J. Williams ; secretary, Mr J. J. Abrahall (re-elected); treasurer, Mr T. Richards; judge, Mr J. Justin ; committee— Messrs W. Woods, G ?j Gough, R. Crooks, E. Gough, A. Hamilton and D. Christopher. •Mr Evans, of Rangiora, recently received an, offer for his red chequer cock 95F from Mr Edmondson, of Melbourne., 96F was imported from Mr Edmondson, along wiiib 114E, his three-quarter brother, by A. Gerard in 1898. I understand the offer was declined. . Mr F. Wilson, of Shirley, received three working homers from England by tie Paparoa. The birds are in the moult, but arFlying dub, Manchester. The winnings of Mr Bkmpion's five birds in, the Belgian Grofid National Race total £1000. It evidently pays in Belgium to keep the best bards. • Another marvellous record of the doming faculty of the homing pigeon was esfcablkhr ed last week by a red chequer hen, tfae property of Mr Bloy, of Lawrence, Otago. This bird was purchased last May froni Mr A Stewart, and had never been trained a yard south lof Christ<ihurch, yet she managed to find her way back to Chriirtch.urch, a distance of 210 miles airline. At tie time of her escapa she had been sittiog fifteen days, so she would be on soft food and in no condition for sudh a journey. Truly ahe must be a marvel for courage. Botih her parents were bred -by Mr Stewart. Hex sire was by a Daurink cock from a mealy hen, by Major Robin from a daughter of R*al% and 126E ; dam by Jurion. cock (imported), son of Osman's 9 and 10, dam No 4. No. 9 Jurion-Delmotte blood ; No. 10 by Le Bleu-Ecaille Dv Grand Concours, from La Rapide; No. 4 from Osman's 3 and 8 No. 3 by son of first Thurso amd Misfortune ; No. 8 Jurion. Le Fou and Le Poreau blood. The performance of Mr BWs bird ought to convince those fanciers who Wt believe in pedigree or line breed_ : ng This pigeon has a rare collection^! celebrated birds in her pedigree ; she is inbred to Osman's Thurso blood the sire ol Major Robin being a full brother to Ist Thurso. __«—«—
