ENTERTAINMENTS.

There was a large attendance at the Oddfellows' Hall last evening, when the. Christchurch Variety Company gave an entertain--men in aid of. St JohnV Church Choir Fund. The company's efforts were highly appreciated, each member having to respond to an encore. The performance concluded with ai farce, entitled, " The Agency Office. " The performers were Miss Hayes, the Rolleston Sisters, Messrs O. Luxton, A. Fricker, B. Jones, J. Hannah, T. Piper, J. Foley and the young New Zealand Wizard. At the Beach Hall, New Brighton, last night, a concert was given dn aid of the New Brighton Beautifying Association. Mr J. Hopkins was in charge of the arrangements; and) there was a very large audience. Selections were given by Mr Goeghegan's Orchestra,, and Messrs Hopkins and S." Williamson sang a duet. Songs were sung by Blisses Brown and " Throp, and Messrs F. and S. Williamson, R. Congreve and Hopkins. Mr Woledge gave a tinwhistle solo, and Mr Clayton an exhibition of conjuring. Missea Brown and Throp and Messrs Hopkiiw raid Williamson sang several quartettes. During the evening, Mr Loughrey thenkfld Mr Hopkins and the performer* for their assistance. Montgomery's Entertainers appeared at the Rangiora Institute Hall 'last evening, before a large audience. Since his Uujt visit to Canterbury, Mr Montgomery has addled ju number of first-class biograph pictures to his programme ; also new illustrated songs and other features, the -whole more than maintaining his reputation: for giving an cn w , tertainment of excellent merit. The animated pictures were large, and shown with the best effect, a railway ride in Switzerland, the American flip-flap railway, end a performance by Rome Aquinaldo, the contor; tionist being particularly good. The illustrated songs (by Mr Montgomery and Mi«s Frances Beverley ; and humorous songs by other members of the company met with hearty appreciation, encores being the rule. The company is to o"pen in the Theatre Royal for a short season on Monday, and the first instalment of the Coronation animated pictures, just received, j will be exhibited. Last evening the ainniversa>ry of the Raitgiora Methodist Sunday School 'was celebrated by a tea meeting. r TheWS "was" bi large attendance, .and the proceedings passed! off successfully.
