THE LOCAL HOLIDAY.

PROCLAMATION BY THE MAYOR. I have received the following telegram: — " The Mayor, Christchurch. South African War. It is with intense pleasure that I advise you I have just received definite intimation that peace has been declared. — J. G. WARD, Acting-Premier." In proclaiming a public holiday I have not thought it desirable to convene a public demonstration on this great occasion. It appears to me that our sentiments may better be expressed by attending the services of thanksgiving which the various churches are holding. Thankfulness rather than triumph should 'be our dominant note to-day.— -H. F. WIGRAM, Mayor.
