KAIAPOI.
The telegram announcing that peace tad been declared was received by 'his Worship the Mayor at ten ' o'clock this morning. Bells were rung, whistles blown, and cannon fired. The residents congregated at the Council Chambers, where the school children were drawn up to salute the flag. The Mayor, after making a short speech, read the telegram from the Acting-Premier. Cheers -were given for the King, the British Army, Lord Kitchener and oliher genesmls, and three cheers for the new Boer colonists. A united service is to be held in Darnley Square. In the evening a monster bonfire is to be lighted, and there will be a concert, at wfeioh a number of speeches will foe made. The firing of cannon and guns was kept up throughout the day, but id was very generally- admitted that the demonstration made a -week ago when the false report was received had rather taken the edge off the present proceedings.
